Early Stage Varicose Veins Symptoms

Early Stage Varicose Veins Symptoms: What to Look Out For

Varicose veins is a condition that occurs when the blood vessels – most those in the legs – get damaged. These blood vessels then become twisted and enlarged and appear as red, purple or blue lines across the affected area. In most cases, these damaged vessels are not a health risk and merely a cosmetic concern. However, for some patients they could cause discomfort and pain. In more severe cases, they could also be indicative of more serious conditions. It is, therefore, good to be aware of the early stage symptoms to allow you to take action before the condition becomes more serious.

Some of the risk factors that could lead to the development of this condition:

  • Family history of vein disease
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Previous injuries
  • Previous surgery
  • Blood clots

Early stage varicose veins symptoms

If you think you are at risk of developing varicose veins, these are some of the early stage symptoms for which you should look out:

  • A feeling of heaviness in the legs
  • A burning sensation across the affected area
  • Itchiness
  • Aching or pain
  • Swelling, especially of the feet
  • Red spots across the lower legs
  • Tiny, visible red, blue or purple blood vessels just under the skin

These are only a selection of possible symptoms. You may not experience all of them – or even any of them – for the condition to develop. They are, however, a good indication of early stage varicose veins.

Treatment options

If this condition is not treated, there is the possibility that it will get progressively worse, and can start causing complications. When early stage symptoms are experienced, there is a chance that conservative treatment may halt the progress of the condition. Conservative therapy consists of wearing compression stockings, getting regular exercise, as well as changing to a healthy diet.

If further treatment of varicose veins are required, there are a number of options available. These include:

  • Sonar-guided treatment
  • Phlebectomy
  • The Button ligation method
  • Sclerotherapy
  • Endovenous laser treatment (ELVT)

All of these treatments are available at The Gibson Vein Practice.
